Joyeux Noel!

I cannot believe that Christmas has come and gone. I really tried to focus on the special traditions and spending time with others this holiday. And...I think I was pretty successful. There was a lot of Christmas movie-watching, gift wrapping, and the like. Sunday we drove up to Corey's parents' and thankfully made it despite the trecherous conditions. Yet another reason why my little car and his non-functional truck may not make it through the winter. Meanwhile, the presents we had intended to pack were sitting at home. We attended Christmas Eve mass and did the traditional opening of presents (for us, not from us, of course). Christmas Day we spent at my parents', along with 18 other members of my family. We crowded around the dinner table, but as my mom says, it shouldn't be any other way. It's so different to be the adult now watching the eyes of other children at Christmas. It's pretty magical. That's what you don't want to lose sight of. Here's a few shots I took on Sunday on our journey into the woods:

Cookie extravaganza

Jen and Dory came over tonight and we baked a bounty of cookies. We prefaced our calorie gorge with a good morning workout that included a one-mile run--which, as distant memories of the half marathon fade, seems like hundreds of miles--and some weights. We started a tad bit late but thankfully by 11:45 pm we had wrapped things up. When you can have this much fun--making cookies while listening to HCJr., drinking wine and chatting all the while--one should never bake alone.

the incident with the vaccuum

Corey came back from Vegas on Monday and I took the afternoon off to pick up the weary travelers at the airport, and also so we could go pick out our Christmas tree, decorate, and spend the rest of the day together. I had pulled out the decorations the day before and left a trail of holiday poo poo everywhere. The tree looks great, though! There are few things better than the smell of a fresh Christmas tree. Now that we have a dining room table, however, space in our house is a bit more cozy. If/when we have game night, there is going to be a major shortage of space. We decorated the tree and I crawled under it to vaccuum up the needles before we put down the tree skirt. I couldn't reach the attachment hose all the way to the wall, so I crawled under the tree. We recently got a new vaccuum and the onboard attachments are nifty and quite effective. Within about 1 min I clocked myself in the head with the attachment and it proceeded to suck up my hair. I screamed to Corey to shut off the vaccuum. Now I have a major lump behind my ear, but thank goodness I still have all of my hair. I was telling this story to my friend, and she thought I had cut my hair because of said incident, but I informed her that it was just a coincidence. I have always had fears of my hair getting sucked up in a hottub or something, but never with vaccuum onboard attachments.

The mother of all cookie lists

Whoa, nelly. My sister sent me this list yesterday. Pretty much any cookie recipe you would ever want is included. You will never have to hunt again.

My book club is doing our 2nd annual cookie swap this weekend! My very favorite Christmas cookies are as follows:
  1. spritz
  2. cutouts
  3. chocolate covered pretzels
I know my mom has most of her recipes from my grandma Helen, and I recently bought a special recipe book where I want to document and treasure all of them. I know some of her specialities were rosettes and doughnuts. What's your favorite Christmas cookie?

Mothers, daughters & irish coffees

The Saturday before Christmas, my mom and I were invited to our neighbor's house to bake cookies and to spend time with some lovely women I have known all of my life. Gina was home from San Fransisco, so it was a great excuse to get together, eat great food and catch up. There was some serious cookie production going on, but there was also several hours there that just included laughing and reminiscing about the good ol' days in our neighborhood (oh yes, and drinking wine, too). We'll have to make an annual tradition of this event. There's a great saying I was thinking of as we were taking pictures: Here's to great women--may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.

snowed in

This past weekend was a blast--we need to get snowed in more often. I was really bummed because I had to miss Krista's 30th birthday celebration, which included much-needed female bonding, but we managed to entertain ourselves. Friday before the snow hit, CB & her friend Deb & I went to see American Gangster. Great movie @ 2:48 min. Makes you consider commercialism just a tich differently. Saturday afternoon CB & Rusty the dog came over & we scrapbooked all day. There was paper doo-doo everywhere. We had intended on going out to Thai, but instead mangaged to find a Chinese place that would actually deliver. Best money I've ever spent on food delivery.

26 November 2007

the incident with the snowglobe

This morning I was sitting at my desk, minding my own business. I had just pulled out my two office Christmas decorations, one being a new wreath purchased on Black Friday, and the other being a very cute miniature snowglobe. As I was reaching for the snowglobe, I dropped it and it shattered, sending water, glass, and synthetic snowflakes ALL over my desk and within a 400-mi radius of where I was sitting. Plus, I had to run to the bathroom to grab towels and it looked like I had wet my pants. A big accident, mind you. Worse than the time I spilled my glass of water in my lap during our flight to Chicago. One guy even chuckled as he passed me in the hall. Not amused, buddy. To top it all off, I had glass in my hand. And who wants to break a snowglobe? I think it ranks up there with the cardinal sin of cutting tags off of mattresses--it just isn't supposed to happen.

HB to my CK

I have always loved these two pictures of Corey and thought they were befitting to post on his 29th birthday. In lieu of a cake, I made my very first pie from scratch (pictures to come): he said that it was good (I think he would tell it to me straight if it wasn't). I don't quite have the crust part down yet, but I'm working on it. Happy birthday-- je t'aime, bebe. I know you're not big on birthdays, but hopefully my celebratory nature will wear off on you as we age. Plus, who can forget a birthday when we stopped to change John Baggs's flat tire?

Speaking of Nov 15 birthdays, Corey know knows his birthday twin, Ryker Spence Doudrick! Congratulations, Janell & Jeff; we are so happy for you.

09 November 2007

the first (real) snowfall

This picture was taken this morning at the airport. It took Corey about 90 min to get to work, with 3 attempts at various routes. Now we are seriously considering purchasing a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Luckily I can snoeshoe if I had to. Only to work, that is. I still feel like a little kid--in awe and amazement--when I see the first snowfall of the season. Usually that majesty doesn't include a snowplow, however.

I'm getting the fever

Liz & I both ordered these monogrammed stockings from Pottery Barn last week & mine arrived in the mail:

I know Thanksgiving's not even here yet, but I am getting excited for Christmas. Here are the reasons why I am excited to prepare for Christmas:
  • decorating--it's like breathing for me. Especially when everything is happy, shiny and smells good (the tree & candles)
  • listening to Christmas music. I know every artist in the world has their own Christmas album, but I never, ever get sick of listening to the music. Growing up my parents amassed a collection of probably 50 Christmas CDs. Part of our tradition of decorating & baking cookies was pulling out those CDs. Some of my favorites include:
  1. Nat King Cole
  2. John Denver "Christmas Like a Lullaby"
  3. Amy Grant
  4. Mariah Carey
  5. Manheim Steamroller
  6. Anything sold @ Hallmark
  • Making Christmas cookies. Last year I had 2 major baking sessions (the first time at my own house!) and our book club did a cookie swap. Yes, there is a reason why we make those rediculously messy & nitpicky cookies, like the mini mint cookies & the chocolate-dipped pretzels. Because they are Heaven on Earth and are the reason from Halloween until New Year's that I cannot give up refined sugar. Really, I was on a roll and then last week it all went to hell in a handbasket.
  • Watching friends & family open gifts. I know the holidays aren't supposed to be about presents, but I love making/finding a gift that is perfect for that particular person. Plus, people need to spoil themselves, & often it's easier for others to do it for them. Unfortuntately for any relative under the age of 10, that perfect gift must have a binding & contain words.
That being said, I know my desire to shop in a commercial sphere has dwindled. Corey, his mom & I went to the mall yesterday and it was CHAOS. Those people make me crazy. So, as I prepare for the upcoming holidays, I'll try to focus on what's positive & not the normal hustle & bustle that people often stress about.

03 November 2007

Weekend begins early

My co-workers & I just got back from St. Paul after attending a great conference. We drove down Thursday afternoon & were pleased to discover our hotel was connected to the Liffey, my favorite (US) Irish bar, and that we had a gorgeous view of the Cathedral. We had dinner at W.A. Frost, a very cool restaurant in a very cool downtown neighborhood. That night after dinner we got a note in our hotel room that they were going to be starting repair work on a pipe at 2:00am. OK, big hotel, shouldn't matter. Um, that wasn't really the case. I think they were RIGHT above our heads. And the banging on the pipes was so loud that maintenance people had to should back & forth to hear one another. Then a very un-sober gentleman next door decided to pay a visit to someone who obviously wasn't there. Maximum caffiene was necessary for the second day of the conference! Saturday my friend Gina & I bought beads & materials so I can make some jewelry for the holidays. Hint: always spend time with people who have talents you admire: they will rub off on you! That night we headed to the Berrisfords for a get-together & several friends of ours were there. I am amazed that any child in their house--let alone the block--could have slept that night. The Guitar Hero my husband purchased was a hit & to say the Catch Phrase tournament was raucous would be the understatement of the year. Thanks for the fun! I know the feeling when your house looks like a tornado the next day.

Kiddies in consuming costumes

Happy Halloween! Here's a few pictures of the little ones I love in their respective costumes. I know, I act as if they are my own wee ones (it's due to a lack of a pet, I imagine):

I have always loved Halloween. This will be one of the only years in my entire life, I believe, that I haven't dressed up. I am sad that we don't get trick-or-treaters, because I love to see the little ones toddling around, trying to stay upright in their massive, overstuffed outfits. Tonight Kim & Tom brought Max the monkey over, then we went to a movie. If you haven't seen "Gone Baby Gone" I highly recommend. We also got to have dinner with Tiffany & Brian, who were in town for a few days. We had a great time catching up, laughing, and talking about our lives & plans. They were giving us some very good advice about home purchasing, which we have soliciited from many sources.

Visit to KC

Last Thursday Liz & I took off to KC to see Janell before the little man arrives. The drive through Iowa was as uneventful as ever, except for the fact that we reminisced about high school prom over a number of formerly popular Boyz II Men ballads. We tried to complete some Mad Libs, but the lack of items to view--mostly just grass, trucks, cows, farms--left little for the imagination. We had such a blast with Janell! Plus we were really productive in helping her get some of those last-minute planning and organizing tasks ready before Baby Doudrick comes home. There was some returning and exchanging of gifts, and then getting items ready for the baby's room and for the hospital. Now they just need their little infant! We also had a pregnancy photo shoot, following Kim's very artistic style, but I know her pictures are much cooler than my attempt at copying. Some of them did turn out really well and it's a great memento for Janell to have to remember this time. Plus, nearly all of us died laughing as Janell was trying to contort herself and Liz was serving as the human backdrop. The three of us also went to play Bunco at Janell's friend's house, and it was a fun, racous time. Saturday night Jeff treated us to Italian as we talked about the details of labor and delivery. Apparently we're all pretty desenstized to shop talk about babyland. Our drive home yesterday was pretty quiet; I think lack of sleep finally set in. Corey and I had dinner when I got home and I fell asleep at 7:00.

Cheers to the happy couple!

CR called me yesterday: she and Shandiz got engaged! Congratulations, you two! I am very happy to share in your wonderful news. I can't wait to celebrate.

P-A-R-T-Y

Friday night the birthday partygoers started out for pizza. I got caught up on the happenings of Kindergarten, 2nd, 6th and 9th grade, which pretty much just serves as a reminder that I am old. Later we went all back to my mom's to have cake--the white kind with the really good sugary frosting and DQ ice cream cake. Love. It. The birthday boys & girls also opened their birthday presents. It was almost a reinactment of Christmas with the wrapping paper and people sprawling all over the living room. That night the Despins & I went back to my house and sat up talking with Corey for a while. And then since we are old, we went to bed pretty early. Saturday Krista & Tom left for an anniversary getaway, so Nathan & I kicked it. There was some napping, playing at the swingset, hanging out with the dog, watching Sesame Street and the highlight of the afternoon was going to the train depot with my mom. We knew we would be in awe and he was. There was a lot of climbing onto the train cars, watching the model trains go by, and then we headed to the children's portion of the museum. He had a blast and I am sure there will be many return visits to see the trains. Bonus points for Auntie!

Birthday central

This past weekend was a preview of things to come. Birthdays for little family members. Man, they are fun. My parents and I went to the Despins to celebrate Nathan's birthday, and this coming weekend, there will be an extravaganza celebration for: Amanda, Abby, Nathan & Keagan. Pretty much if my future kids aren't born in the months of Oct or Nov, they can forget about having a birthday party! But through my observations as an aunt, I've come to realize what I think are some of the laws of children:
  • Any toy you buy them will definitely excite them--especially if they've asked for it. However, often the presents that don't necessarily come from the toy store bring even greater joy.

Case in point: Sarah & Ryan brought their dog, Bailey. Bailey is a beagle/pug mix, and more Nathan's size than his current pet, Lambeau, who more closely resembles a small horse more so than a dog (especially to someone who is 2 feet tall). All of the party guests could have left and as long as Bailey was there, Nathan would have been happy. There could have been no food, no water--except for the dog--and all would have been right with the world.

  • Being the guest of honor is hard work. People get tired--heck--all of us guests went to bed before 10:00 pm after the party. Plus, all of that sugar and cake really gets to you.

And finally, a question: do babies & toddlers get birthday party hangovers? Just planning for the upcoming weekend.

13 October 2007

My darling husband

I got this from Kim's blog. I such a plagarizer/idea stealer. My brother-in-law said I should do this one because he commented that the plagarizing/stealing is kind of fun to follow. Thanks, Tom.
  • What is his name? Corey (most everyone from college calls him CK. I'm glad it's not tatooed on his arm, however, as the cologne advertising isn't a classic symbol. Plus, tattoos are permanent).
  • How long have you been together? Almost 9 years. I know, the mind reels at this.
  • How old is he? He'll be 29 in a few weeks. Already planning the big par-tay for next year.
  • Who eats more? Definitely him. But when I do, it's mentioned. Like last week when we went out to eat and Corey got a to-go box. I cleaned my plate.
  • Who said I love you first? He did.
  • Who is taller? He is--about 8". Perfect height where I fit right into his nook area. Plus I don't have to worry about heels.
  • Who sings better? I probably sing more on key, but he definitely can sing higher and louder. Just play "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus and you will find out.
  • Who is smarter? How do you measure this? We are both smart in our own ways. He definitely has more common sense than I do, however. Plus, humility automatically makes you more qualified in this department.
  • Whose temper is worse? Um. Me. That's a unanimous vote.
  • Who does the laundry? We do our own. Coercion hasn't worked thus far.
  • Who does the dishes? We both do. It's on his chore list but he reminds me, "Why would I want to want to do the dishes?"
  • Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? Which way are you looking at the bed? I'm on the right, if in it.
  • Who pays the bills? Mostly Corey. We're working on that one, though.
  • Who mows the lawn? The lawn care service.
  • Who cooks dinner? Usually me, but he does all the grilling and makes good breakfasts.
  • Who drives when you are together? Usually me. I much prefer to be the driver.
  • Who is more stubborn? Me. No question. I've been told this would have been excellent preparation as a lawyer.
  • Who is the first to admit when they're wrong? Definitely... not... me.
  • Whose parents do you see the most? We see them both pretty equally.
  • Who kissed who first? He kissed me. Apparently he was shy & was trying to make a great first impression, but I was beginning to wonder...
  • Who asked who out? Corey asked me out, while standing around a group of people, one of whom was Tom Berrisford.
  • Who proposed? He did.
  • Who is more sensitive? It's sort of a toss-up on this one. I cry more at everyday stressors, but Corey is very sentimental.
  • Who has more friends? Probably equal.
  • Who has more siblings? Me--I have four. Corey's got one brother.
  • Who wears the pants in the family? John Baggs. But seriously, I'm thinking I would say me, and he would say me...

Date night

We've tried to establish Thursday nights for date night, but since our weekend was relatively absent of the usual obligations, we took advantage. Corey took me to Hell's Kitchen for dinner, a new restaurant in town. I'm not sure if we stumbled upon some weekend event or just because it's new, but it was really busy. The decor is mostly all red and black, and the space is a continuation of a few big rooms with big sheer black drapes that can be pulled out to make different "spaces". There is gothic/Rembrandtish artwork sprinkled on the walls. I kind of imagine that it's Halloween all year round for this place. If you've never had bison, you need to try it. Now of course my argument about not wanting to eat deer meat seems thin, considering I just ate buffalo. I've heard their brunch is excellent too, so I imagine we'll be revisiting. Sunday morning we cleaned the basement! I know I am freak of nature because I like to clean. It really didn't take as long as I would have thought and now the items we are recycling/taking to the dump are in the center of the room, hard to miss! Next we have to clean out the garage, put the patio table and grill away, pack up the tent, then I want to paint our bedroom. Sunday night we went to a happy hour with Joe and Em to watch the Yankees game. I didn't want them to win, but at least in some way it extends the baseball season and minimizes the football season--at least at our house.

03 October 2007

When you hear the chimes, turn the page

Today was our school-wide volunteer day, so I opted to do something fun and as far from labor intensive as possible. A co-worker and I went to a local elementary school to read books to kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes. My goodness, it brought me back to the wonder of reading books where the colors and images jump off the pages, where adventures take place and where it ties up neatly in about 20 minutes. And I forgot what it's like to be around so many little people. They have very important information about their cat, Sammy. They tell you you're pretty. They ask you where you live. They all want to hug you when you leave. It's pretty much a human Hallmark card.

01 October 2007

Buddy Walk!

Yesterday was the sixth annual Buddy Walk, the fourth here in the northern part of the state. Unfortunately, it was held inside due to the massive amounts of rain we've had lately, but it was so amazing to see so many people--and every single one of them was wearing a bright blue shirt! The pictures don't really do it justice. It's such a great event that brings people together. There is one family who has a little boy with Down syndrome that I see every year at the walk: I can't believe how big he's gotten in 3 years! Thank you so much to all of you who support this endeavor. I am drafting a thank you letter, but frankly I get rather emotional about everyone's generosity and I have to put it away for a little while! Indeed, my cup runneth over. The timing of this year's event is especially interesting, considering all the choas that is involving DD services in our state. I actually got to speak to the local and state president about Katie's situation, so that was encouraging. An update: today we are going to visit a location where Katie could possibly move to, but it's nervewracking because we feel like we have to make a decision so soon. Keep sending the good vibes! They are greatly appreciated. Pictures to come soon!

What Color Crayon Are You?

You Are a Red Crayon

Your world is colored with bright, vivid, wild colors. You have a deep, complex personality - and you are always expressing something about yourself. Bold and dominant, you are a natural leader. You have an energy that is intense... and sometimes overwhelming. Your reaction to everything tends to be strong.

Your color wheel opposite is green. Green people are way too mellow to understand what drives your energy.

What Color Crayon Are You?

Whoa, I'm not sure I like this psychoanalysis...but frankly a lot of it is true. I found myself spending an inordinate amount of time doing these little personality profiles. There is one for everybody. Kim, thank goodness you have ideas about blogs. Frankly, mine has become rather boring as my life has settled down.

Loooong week

It's silly to think my blog entry title really distinguishes this week from any other. However, when you are sitting at work on a Friday, there is little else you really conceptualize--except for how for the next 2 1/2 days you won't neccesarily have to be busy. Last weekend was Alumni weekend, so our house was full from Thurs-Sun. Thankfully Anne came and we hung out with Kim, otherwise I would have been outta there (it's a guy thing). This past Tuesday, I pretty much ate all 3 meals at work, which is really sad. Between meetings, presentations & events it was a full day. My co-worker Jen & I have been pretty dedicated to our 2-weekday 7:00 am workouts. I am already sore and it's only 10:00 am. Plus, yoga started this week, which I'm really pumped about. Except that I actually have to get dressed & go to work afterwards, instead of going back to bed. Wednesday night was book club & yea--I'm back in the saddle. I wasn't able to go all summer, so it was great to see the ladies again. And last night I indulged in pure gluttony--TV gluttony, that is. Yes, the mammoth set was returned to us yesterday, so I proceeded to sit in front of it from 7-10 pm. It. Was. Great. No doubt. Friday after work I helped my mom dig up most of her perennials around the perimeter of their house...this was no easy task Gardening is not for the faint of heart! Saturday Corey & I had dinner with Sarah & Ryan. Either Sarah or I would leave the table to use the bathroom, and the other woman was left to her own devices, as the male conversation was constant--on sports, that is. You put two coaches together and it's like Christmas [for them].

21 September 2007

biological conundrum

So I've always looked young for my age. I accept that. It's my full cheeks and I suppose what one might equate to a familiar "look" (remember the best man speech at my wedding, aka Britney Spears? There's many more stories like that one.). But yesterday I was at work, in my office mind you, and someone asked if I was 17. Gimme a break. That doesn't even make sense. In the same breath, I am faced with something that I wouldn't have to think about until MUCH later in life: grey hair. Yup. I've got it. I remember the first 3 I discovered on Easter Sunday. It's gotten much worse since then. And I can't really use the "maybe they're blond and kind of look grey" excuse, because I'm not really blond to begin with. How does that genetic combination make sense?

20 September 2007

long overdue purse purge

I have discovered that since my life has calmed down a bit, my blogs--or the desire to describe (great) events on my blog--has decreased. Thanks to Kim I have a topic, however

Found in the purse I carry every day (besides the basics)...
  • checkbook (yes, checks are still accepted here)
  • Buddy Walk donation list (I'm still taking donations : )
  • book ideas for book club
  • lipgloss x2
  • lotion
  • band-aids
  • directions to my friend's house
  • ticket stub from Rochester Redwings game
  • phone number for my friend in Ireland (Jane--call me!!!)
  • business card for massage therapist
  • orange peeler
  • headband

My purse is actually quite small. I like it that way. I usually drag my large leather carry-on around, which just gets filled with unneccessary items, like Kim's funny list, which is more entertaining than mine. Next item: sensible, cute shoes that are good for the back (I said cute).

What's in YOUR bag?

19 September 2007

Corey's message

I'll tell you the details later. Could I call you after school? Or will your mom be mad at me?

Love,
Your boyfriend.

I'm still employed

We got notice today that the program we administer will continue! We applied for another additional cycle of funding and found out today--unofficially--that we were refunded. It wasn't the success of our program that I doubted; but still not knowing for those extra few months whether or not our program would continue--even the most faithful start to get nervous. So I can shelf those new resume drafts that I had been composing. I don't need them quite yet. My cousin Mary took me out to the Pickwick to celebrate. It was delicious. It's those occasions where I am convinced I can't be a vegetarian.

16 September 2007

I'm caving

I didn't hold out for Grey's Anatomy. My parents are out of town and I have been going over there to watch TV. Yes, I will admit it, I think I would be kind of sad if we really didn't have a TV. I watched Pretty in Pink, the 80s cult classic, and I must say, I am seeing a lot of the same clothes around the halls now...I was given Friday off, and I had a pretty productive/enjoyable day. I went to a coffee shop and got a whole batch of papers corrected. Then I drove out to Corey's classroom to meet his kids and I had them write on a Robert Frost poem. Man, I was impressed. It's always interesting to see him in another world, one I am not usually exposed to. His students are always very responsive to him. Then they all wanted to hug me as I was leaving. Later that night, I met up with Corey, TA and Wick for a cocktail. We had some bright conversations about boxing and boxing movies. Saturday I got up early and hit the gym. It was really empty, which always pleases me. I am not there to socialize and would rather avoid eye contact with anyone. Then I drove out to Cloquet to see my friend Kate and her husband, Matt, both of whom I went to college with. Nice houses out in that neck of the woods! Not sure I could tolerate the drive, though. Today I'm going to try not to go shopping (even buying shampoo yesterday set me back $50) and will try to devise a plan to watch the Emmys....anyone who's free want me to come over???

11 September 2007

Technology, smechnology

My Sunday morning alarm clock was Corey's announcement that the TV was broken. I felt bad, but I would be lying if I said my heart was broken. No, I don't want anyone to have to spend money on repairs--that's no fun. Later that day, still consumed with the TV situation, he called me to ask if I had discovered the TV to now be working. I was not at home, and that the thought hadn't crossed my mind. Monday several calls were made to determine the cost of repairing the TV. By the time I got home from work on Monday afternoon, Corey and Joe Joe had already dropped the TV off at an electronics repair shop. That's quick service. So...just contemplating some other home "stuff" that needed attention--our vaccuum stopped running last week and the dishwasher is on its last leg. I lost the discussion about the dishwasher, and rightfully so: it's still working. However, I do have some pretty nice vaccuums in mind, so I may have to use that as leverage soon. I'm wierd. I like vaccuuming. I may have to boycott some shows at our house just to show my devotion. Just until the new season of Grey's starts.

10 September 2007

I live for the weekends

Last Friday one of my co-workers actually asked me if school had started that week or the previous. Hence, things have started at mock-10 pace! Friday night, Jess came over since both of our husbands were on baseball duty. We had a great time catching up, plus all my very knowledgable friends & family in the health sphere have given me lots of good suggestions for my shoulder. Saturday I had an urge to do some baking and was watching Giada deLaurentis for inspiration. I made zuchinni bread for the first time, and some chocolate cupcakes. Saturday night we had a BBQ--despite the cool temps--and TA, the Harrimans, the Berrisfords, the Lahtis and the Wicklund/Horvaths came over. Our house seems small when there's 10 other people in it. Sunday morning I met my friend Jen for coffee (that's her on the L of me). She's currently living in Duluth but we never get a chance to see each other. Our coffee chat lasted FOUR HOURS, and I didn't notice until the sun had moved to the other side of the building. Even though we have major lapses in our visits, it's obvious we have lots to talk about.Sunday night we went to my parents' to celebrate my dad's birthday. My mom made her signature teriayki steak and the best twice-baked potatoes I have ever had. My nephews were there so I got to hear about the 6th grade and kindergarten scenes.

Wanted: personal masseuse

Who doesn't want one, right? I'm going to get a massage today because the tightened muscles in my back have gradually turned into a tingling knot, and now I have little darts of pain shooting down my back and my hand is tingling. Our friend DJ is a physical therapist (well, almost) and I called him last night begging for any advice he could spare. I spent the next hour lying on a balled up towel with my arms outstretched, calling it my Jesus pose. There was another stretch he tried to describe over the phone that involved a towel in a traction-like position, but I think I'll have to wait to see that one in person. Okay, for anyone who has muscle/back problems: go to yoga! Then I wouldn't be in this predicament. Any advice/tips people want to leave would be great!

Newly sharpened pencils

"Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms."
What a great way to start the new school year! I don't really use pencils, but new school supplies does have me focused on starting new, getting organized, and getting rid of clutter. Plus, the thought of new school supplies makes me happy (I just bought a label maker and I'm psyched, even if I have to invent things to make labels for. I know this sounds like Monica.) Classes began yesterday and if the rest of the term is anything like the first day, I think it's going to be a good one. It usually ebbs and flows, so I'm predicting an upslope. I am ready for a new schedule--for working, exercising, having free time, etc...I've found that being a creature of habit actually makes me more flexible and easier to be around. Fall ball is back in full force, so there will be lots of time to ponder my new schedule.

Long siesta

This weekend I was definitely spoiled with lots of activities and entertainment. Well, cleaning the house on Friday night wasn't really entertainment, but I was glad to get it done and then I could relax & have fun. Saturday my friend Jen & I went kayakking and had a really good time. The river was calm, which let me practice my rowing without too much exertion. If you've never kayakked before, do it in a single kayak. I had to tell Tiffany, my only kayak partner, that I don't actually suck and I can steer. All the Hilton Head ladies will remember that excursion. Saturday night Kat and Anastasia stayed at our house--I know she's already grown 2 lbs., but I still can't get over how teeny she is. She's a good little furnace. Sunday we prepped for Janell's baby shower, which I think culminated the end of a long summer of seeing my ladies. It was, as always, great to have so many of you in one place. I hope you enjoyed yourself, Janell! That night Corey & I went out to dinner with Kim & Tommy, which was long overdue. The canal was FLOODED with people, but we mangaged to wrestle a table at Little Angie's. Mmmmm, I love Mexican. And that's not even real Mexican. We also sat out on the deck at Grandma's and stretched the night out as long as possible. It was a great ending to a very busy summer. I kind of feel like I'm ready for a new [academic] year's resolution--this one's been really full already. See friends & family--check. Laugh a lot--in progress. Relax more--in progress.

Football deficiency

Just when I think summer sports get to be a lot, I am reminded that after baseball begins football. I loathe football. I can't exactly tell you why. But almost everything about the sport really gives me the ickies. It probably started because I never did and still to this day don't know how to keep score. Pretty much all I've absorbed is that each team has 4 chances to make a 1st down. Then there's field goals, conversions (I don't know what those are)...My sisters, on the other hand, and even my mom, actually know quite a bit about football. When I was in high school I would sit in the stands and talk to my friends, or play in the pep band. I would only become aware of the game when the entire stadium was in an uproar. However, I love being outside in the fall, so I will definitely go to games as it's a great outing in the cool weather. Plus, if we get to go to Notre Dame this fall, I will take in every single second. But what annoys me most is the noise of TV football games. All the stupid commentators making assessments and analyzing every freakin move. All that static (because it's turned up so loud) gives me an instant headache. I would gladly clean the basement, organize my sock drawer or pay bills in order to avoid having to listen to TV football games. So...if any of you have a project on Sunday or Monday nights for the next few months, just give me a call. And as for baseball, keep it comin'. Hockey, swimming, cricket, whatever else; I'll take it.

Taking a stand

For those of you who know my younger sister, you know that our family has been on an incredible journey--not just in the last few years, but basically, my mom's raising her is testiment to people trying to provide for those who society deems less important, marginalized. The current situation with her housing again proves that these problems are both persistent and cyclical. Of course one can never really be comfortable with the way in which things are. Something always tests that comfort and jeopardizes stability. I guess because I am the sibling and not the parent my inexperience makes me alarmed by and less accustomed to the system that often fails people with special needs. Perhaps my mother's--and all family members/providers of these groups--experience is one of more endurance; one with a belief that she can be rest assured that her daughter is being provided for, is safe, and happy. We are in the process of determining whether or not Katie will be moving because of the mismanagement of finances. Our hopes are that she and her "family" will be able to stay in the home where they currently reside . I am trying to write letters to local and state government to try and get them to listen to the stories of the families that these financial decisions effect. Please send your good energy--we need all the help we can get!

Our first anniversary

Dear Corey,

I can't believe it's been an entire year since our wedding! It's gone by so fast: where did that entire middle part go, from about January-April? I have been looking foward to our celebrating this weekend for some time now. Partly because it's a great excuse for you and I to get away. But also I've found myself over the last few months being very nostalgic for the day we were married. It's such a monumental thing, to stand up in front of all of your friends and family and say, I love this man with all I have, and I will do anything and everything to keep that sacred. It's days like today that remind us about what's important and what we need to devote time to make an even better us. Thank you for the suprise weekend to Lutsen; it was absolutely perfect and we have as a result created even more memories. I love you baby; thanks for being the person I am learning with, growing with, and dreaming with. Happy one-year anniversary, and to all of those ahead--

Je t'aime, bebe,
Carrie

Where nobody knows your name

Okay, I understand that in the karmic world if you make trouble, sometimes you get a little back. But my case stands tall: I have always liked my name. Six letters in my first name; six in my last. So when I was contemplating a name change, I thought I was lucky enough to have a "classic" last name that I could combine with another. It rolls off the tongue. Somehow that belief does not always transfer to the outside world. I completely understand that it is not the life's work of my friends and family to spell it, think about it, whatever. But when I deal with the customer service members of the world nobody gets it. I spend more time giving possible alternative names, spellings (including spaces), and I still get lost in the system. My hotel reservations are temporary lost. I am filed under T, K and all other letters in between. Apparently it's really hard to spell Kemp, also. Yesterday I was talking to our internet provider and he explained that nobody gets it because my last name isn't hyphenated. Oh. Okay, Mr. I Wouldn't Ever Consider Changing My Name. Believe me, if you keep it, I understand. If you change it, I understand. But gosh forbid I dare consider otherwise. Okay, this is a total whine fest that I've devoted too much time to.

New 'do

After reading Kim's blog this week, I've found that now is the time for new hairdos. I think it has something to do with the end of summer, when I just don't care about doing much of anything besides a ponytail. Plus, after prepping for a wedding, I had enough of the beauty maintenance for a while. I contemplated getting bangs, but I don't think mine would turn out as cute as Kim's. Or anybody's. I decided on a body wave so I can just wash it and go (I sound like a Breck commercial).

Roasting the Piggy

This past Saturday was the Despins' 7th Annual Pig Roast and was this year's theme was appropriately entitled "The Year of the Pig". After an interesting voyage down to Rochester, which included being hit on 35E and having the driver escape without retribution, Corey & I met the Despins, Tom's parents and my parents at Buffalo Wild Wings. I really needed a beverage after that drive. Corey likes crane machines. A lot. Just ask him where his Anaheim Angels wallet came from. The real one where he keeps his license, credit cards and other adult stuff. It's a riot. He managed to win a Twins bear for Nathan, Scooby Doo flashlights for Krista's friends' children, and a big prize for himself: a $50 gift card to BW3. Of course I was right there cheering him on, recreating the scene in In America where the dad spends their entire rent money on the ET doll for Ariel. Yeah for prizes. Saturday was a VERY HOT day for the pig roast; it started with rain but luckily the garage and tents set up in their yard shielded us from the sun. The pig roast has gradually transitioned from an all-out beer fest/frat party setup to a kid-friendly picnic of sorts. There were more kids there than a small daycare center. I was on Nathan duty and I've come to the conclusion that if you have a toddler, you don't really need to go to the gym, as chasing them around provides ample exercise. Whew! I was really lucky in that my whole family was there, including my nieces and nephews and my cousin. Plus, Tiff and Addi, Liz, and Nick, Anne & Gus (the dog) also came. It's great to see how this event is really anticipated by so many! Thanks for a great day, Krista, Tom & Nathan! We had a blast. Pictures to come.
